Visionwest Waka Whakakitenga is looking for a talented Communications Manager to lead our efforts in sharing stories of hope, advocating for equity, and amplifying our mission to build hope together for stronger communities across Aotearoa.

Mō te tūranga | About the role 

At Visionwest, we’re proud to serve communities with innovative programmes in housing, whānau support, community health, youth development, and more. We’re seeking someone who can bring creativity, strategy, and a deep cultural understanding to our communications work.

Key responsibilities of the Communications Manager role include:

  • Develop and deliver Visionwest’s communications strategy, ensuring all messaging aligns with our mission and values.
  • Build and maintain strong media relationships to share stories that matter.
  • Oversee digital platforms, including our website and social media, to engage diverse audiences.
  • Work alongside Māori leaders to embed Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles into all communications.
  • Support  Visionwest’s leadership with speeches, media statements, and public engagements.
  • Collaborate with teams across the organisation to amplify Visionwest’s impact and build awareness of our services.
  • Lead crisis communication efforts when needed, protecting and enhancing Visionwest’s reputation.

Mōu ake | About you

As an expert in your field, you will have strong relationships with key media outlets, experience creating high quality content and the ability to implement communication strategy that aligns with our mission, values and strategic objectives.

Skills and experience we are looking for include:

  • An experienced communicator with at least 5-8 years in senior roles, preferably in the non-profit or social services sector.
  • Skilled in strategic thinking and able to craft messaging for diverse audiences.
  • Knowledgeable about Te Tiriti o Waitangi, with a demonstrated ability to incorporate Te Ao Māori perspectives into their work.
  • Adept at media relations and managing high-pressure situations with professionalism.
  • A talented storyteller who can articulate Visionwest’s mission and impact in compelling ways.
  • Confident in managing digital platforms, analytics, and audience engagement strategies.

Qualifications:

  • A tertiary qualification in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.
  • Experience in leading communications strategies and managing brand presence.
