Visionwest Community Trust is looking for a Social Policy and Research Specialist to shape our social policy positioning and research efforts and contribute to transformative change for whānau across Aotearoa.

Mō te tūranga | About the role 

In this dynamic role reporting to the Director of Partnerships, you’ll lead the development of high-quality research, RFPs, and policy papers that align with Visionwest’s strategic goals and support our executive team. You'll take a lead writer role for government tenders, develop insightful policy positions, and create evidence-based research proposals to fill critical knowledge gaps. Through your work, you’ll influence domestic policy, resource allocation, and initiatives that drive positive outcomes in housing, health, poverty, and community development for whānau.

Key responsibilities of the Social Policy and Research Specialist role include

  • Spearhead policy research projects that respond to whānau needs and inform Visionwest’s policy positioning.
  • Write and manage RFPs, EOIs, and other government submissions.
  • Develop and draft policy papers and reports for the CEO, DCE,  government departments, ministers, and key stakeholders.
  • Analyse government policy trends, leverage data, and provide policy advice to guide Visionwest’s strategies.

Mōu ake | About you

As an expert in your field, your experience will include policy research, analysis and advice within a complex organisation. You will also be skilled with advocacy, lobbying, diplomatic relations  and influencing policy change. Leaders will rely on you to respond to emerging whānau policy issues and trends in Aotearoa New Zealand, and influence domestic policy and resource allocation to bring positive change for whānau in New Zealand.

Skills and experience we are looking for include

  • A relevant tertiary qualification (e.g., public policy, law, community development or another relevant field).
  • 5+ years of experience in policy research, analysis, RFP writing, and advocacy.
  • Advanced research, writing, and analytical skills, with a strong eye for detail.
  • Commitment to kaupapa Māori principles and Visionwest’s values of aroha, whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, and mana.
  • Indepth knowledge of social service community development methodologies is advantageous.
  • Commit to honouring and imbedding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi is essential for the role.
